Tree of life Mata Ni Pachedi

Mata ni pachedi literally means “behind the mother goddess”, and is a cloth that constitutes a temple of the goddess. About 400 years ago, when people of the nomadic Vaghari community of Gujarat were barred from entering temples, they made their own shrines with depictions of the Mother Goddess on cloth. This ingenuous solution is believed to be the origin of Mata ni Pachedi, the sacred art, which is now revered by all.

This Painting depicts the two avatars of Mother Goddess, Jogni Mata, and Meladi Mata.  Meladi Mata is the folk goddess worshipped by the Vagharis community. She is known as the protector of farmlands. Jogni Mata is known as the goddess of contradictions. She symbolizes both the aspects of the Mother Goddess; a life-giver and a life-taker. The goddesses are being worshipped by priests and devotees. The Tree of Life shown is a universal symbol for life and positivity.
